Darren Sweetnam in Ireland training
THE Ireland rugby team’s main focus at present may be on the remaining three autumn internationals, but the 2019 Rugby World Cup is also looming large.
The display of the Ireland players over the next three weekends, beginning with this Saturday’s tasty clash with Argentina at the Aviva Stadium, 6.30pm, will go a long way towards determining which players are on the plane to Japan next autumn.
Joe Schmidt’s Ireland will face Scotland in their World Cup pool opener at the International Stadium in Yokohama on Sunday, September 22 at 7.45am (Irish time), followed by Japan on Saturday, September 28 in Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA, Shizuoka Prefecture at 7.15am (Irish time).
Ireland then face Russia on Thursday, October 3 in Kobe Misaki Stadium, Kobe, at 10.15am (Irish time) with the final group match against Samoa on Saturday October 12 in Fukuoka Hakatanomori Stadium, Fukuoka, 10.45am (Irish time).
So who are the bolters to make Ireland’s squad? Munster winger Darren Sweetnam, included in Ireland’s squad for the autumn internationals, looks to have a decent shot, given his impressive form.
At 7/2 Sweetnam is a decent bet to make the plane to Japan.
