Three Limerick players help Rep of Ireland U-17s reach European Championship elite phase

Limerick FC players Aoibheann Clancy, Aoife Horgan and Sophie Liston members of the Rep of Ireland U-17 squad which has qualified for the UEFA European Championships Elite Round

THREE Limerick FC teenagers are part of the Republic of Ireland Women's Under 17s which has qualified for the UEFA European Championships Elite Round.

Exciting teenagers Aoibheann Clancy, Sophie Liston and Aoife Horgan played crucial roles as Ireland finished second in their group which is enough for them to book a place in the Elite Round stages of the competition next year. Having previously beaten Albania 14-0 and drew 0-0 with Wales, the Republic of Ireland suffered a 1-0 defeat to Serbia in Serbia on Sunday afternoon.

Both Sophie Liston and Aoife Horgan were introduced as second half substitutes in the Republic of Ireland’s game with Serbia, while Liston had also featured off the bench in the impressive opening day win over Albania.

Sophie Liston from, Newcastle West, has also played with Newcastle West and AK United. A student at Scoil Mhuire & Ide, Liston was captain of the Desmond League U-16 Gaynor Cup squad in 2018.

Midfielder Aoibheann Clancy played in both the fixtures with Albania and Wales. From Kilbehenney, Aoibheann Clancy is a student at Presentation Secondary School, Thurles.

The Elite Round draw will be on Friday, November 23 in Nyon with the fixtures set to take place in the spring 2019.
