McMahon claims All Ireland handball title for Limerick

LIMERICK'S Martina McMahon was crowned an All Ireland champion over the weekend with success in the Senior Ladies Handball Singles Final.

The Broadford Handball Club member shocked the number one seed and favourite Catriona Casey (Cork) winning an enthralling battle over three games 21-10, 14-21, 21-10 to secure her first senior All Ireland.

McMahon started well and opened up a 15-5 lead early on. Despite a brief rally from Casey, the Limerick star took the first 21-10 in front of a large crowd in Croke Park.

Champion Casey hit back in the second and forced a third winning 21-14.

The third game was tight early on as the players were tied at 7-7 before McMahon seized the initiative and opened up a 17-9 lead. From there, there was no turning back as she closed out the game 21-10 to capture the title.
