Limerick's Ciara Neville makes 100m semis in Tbilisi

LIMERICK athlete Ciara Neville has qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m at the European Youths Athletics Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Castletroy College student Neville, who competes for Emerald AC, finished in third place in her first round heat on Thursday morning in a time of 12.03.

The heat was won by Germany’s Kwadwo Keshia in 11.78.

Neville will now go in the semi-finals of the 100m later on Thursday afternoon.

The 16-year-old claimed gold in the 100m at the European Youth Olympic festival in Tbilisi last year.

Neville has been in excellent form this summer. The talented Limerick athlete claimed silver in the Junior 100m and bronze in the 200m at the GloHealth National Junior and U-23 Championships in Tullamore earlier this month.

The teenager also claimed gold in the intermediate 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay for Castletroy College at the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field finals in Tullamore last month.

Emerald ACs Jamie Mitchell will compete in the 400m semi-finals at the European Youths Athletic Championships on Friday afternoon, while Cathal Locke of Dooneen AC goes in the 400m hurdles first round on Friday morning.
