Robbie McKenzie nets late winner as Gillingham edge victory at Barrow

Robbie McKenzie scored in the 13th minute of second-half stoppage-time as Gillingham edged a 1-0 League Two victory for their first win at Barrow since 1967.

McKenzie’s goal following a last-gasp Lenni Cirino corner ended a run of three-successive defeats for the Gills and deepens Barrow’s relegation woes.

For the Cumbrians, it was a third-successive defeat for new boss Dino Maamria, with the Bluebirds remaining third-bottom, out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

The lengthy added time was largely due to a second-half injury to home striker Jovan Malcolm.

Play was halted for eight minutes while Malcolm received treatment for a leg injury after a tackle by substitute Ethan Coleman.

Gillingham’s long overdue success at Holker Street was just about deserved.

Ronan Hale struck a post after 47 minutes with goalkeeper Wyll Stanway beaten.

Charlie McCann went closest for the Cumbrians, hitting the crossbar direct from an 88th minute corner before the visitors struck to steal maximum points at the death.
