Glenstal reach Munster Schools Junior Cup semi-final

Glenstal produced a barnstorming final quarter to defeat Ardscoil Rís 24-7 in the Munster Schools Junior Cup quarter final played in the bitter cold environs of UL’s 4G pitch yesterday afternoon.

Despite having the lion’s share of possession Glenstal were wasteful and despite many trips to the scoring zones, they came up empty handed.

For their part it took Ardscoil twenty eight minutes to breach the Glenstal twenty two and when they did, they surrendered possession after only two phases.

It was indicative of a poor half of rugby that neither side would have been happy with. Glenstal re-emerged in the second half with a renewed purpose and desire to eliminate the errors.

Six minutes after the interval their improved application was rewarded when Michael Gilbride crossed for a try in the corner following an excellent break from Ronan Quinn. Hogan hit the crossbar with the conversion.

Five minutes later and they doubled their lead when Tiernan Ryan crossed after a sustained period of pressure from the Glenstal forwards. Hogan converted and Glenstal took a 12-0 lead.

Ardscoil replacement Daniel Okeke made the impact his coaches would have wanted when he struck back almost immediately with a try which Gerard Higgins converted to cut the gap to just five points. With five minutes remaining, the game was in the balance. Glenstal pressure yielded a scrum dead centre on the Ardscoil 22. Having faked to go left, Brian Leonard changed direction and suddenly Glenstal had created an overlap which Ronan Hanly finished in the corner.

Glenstal centre Andrew Hogan then came up with an intercept try for the last score of the game to see his side through to the semi-finals. Glenstal will learn their semi-final opponents in Thursday's draw. Rockwell play PBC today (Wednesday) while Crescent play Castletroy and St Munchin's play CBC on Thursday.
