LIMERICK sides UL and LIT recorded vital wins in the Fitzgibbon Cup this Thursday
UL are all but through to the quarter finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup after a convincing 5-15 to 3-14 win over local rivals Mary I. Meanwhile, LIT scored a narrow 0-18 to 1-14 victory over UCD in a keenly-contested second round game.
Two Tommy Heffernan goals in the first five minutes to get UL off to a perfect start against their city rivals Mary I.
They led 2-8 to 1-9 at the break with Adare's Declan Hannon getting the Mary I goal as they fought back.
UL pulled away in the second half with goals from Jason Ford's and Pat Ryan of Doon.
Mary I refused to buckle and goals from Sean Linnane and Declan Hannon kept them in the game.
However, a late Kevin O'Brown goal sealed the win for UL.
Meanwhile, LIT rallied strongly in the second half to see off UCD as the Dublin side led 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time.
Clare’s, David Reidy lead the charge for LIT scoring their first five points, capped by an excellent point from the left hand sideline.
The sides then traded scores, but LIT gained the advantage on the 25th minute with a free from midfielder Diarmaid Byrnes.
Two more points in quick succession gave LIT a three point advantage and seemingly in command.
However, a break from the Belfield students ended in James Maher rifling home for the game’s only goal. However, Clareman Peter Duggan fired over the winning score in the 33rd minute.
