Crescent hit Glenstal for six in Senior Cup

CLINICAL Crescent College Comprehensive reignited their Munster Schools Senior Cup glory bid after securing an impressive 39-17 second run victory over Glenstal Abbey School on UL’s 4G rugby pitch on Wednesday.

Crescent bounced back from last week’s opening round defeat to CBC to score six tries in avenging their quarter-final defeat to Glenstal Abbey from 12 months ago.

Crescent College Comprehensive will now await Friday’s quarter-final draw when the Dooradoyle side will learn the identity of their next opponents. However, on the evidence of this excellent showing, Crescent are likely to have a big say in the destination of the 2016 Senior Cup.

It was obvious from the kick-off that the quick nature of the 4G playing surface was going to be to Crescent College’s liking. Unlike eight days earlier when the Dooradoyle side struggled to get good, quick possession to their exciting backline, Crescent managed it on this occasion.

Crescent College boast some devastating broke field runners in their backline.

While there was no doubting Crecsent’s superiority, the winners were somewhat flattered by their winning margin as two of their tries came from breakaways.

Crescent led 15-10 at half time. The winners led 8-0 after 20 minutes. Full-back Daniel Hurley landed an early penalty, before a smashing Calvin Nash break created the opening for centre partner Billy O’Hora to touch down.

Undaunted. Glenstal hit back with 10 unanswered points of their own, through an opportunist try from Jack Stafford, while out-half Ben Healy converted to go with his earlier penalty.

Daniel Hurley converted his own try after 31 minutes to help Crescent regain the lead and the city side raced 22-10 in front soon after the restart when replacement Michael Sheahan scored. Winger Conor Phillips and replacements Jake Fehilly and flanker Niall Mulcahy also touched down for the winners. Hooker George Downing replied for Glenstal.
