Grant McCann declared the 3-3 draw with Wigan as Doncaster’s worst result of the season after they squandered a three-goal lead.
Goals from Francis Okoronkwo, Jay McGrath and Harry Clifton looked set to mark McCann’s 500th game in management in style as Rovers were cruising through the first hour.
But Wigan staged an unlikely comeback with debutant Owen Moxon scoring an 87th-minute equaliser after goals from Joe Taylor and Callum Wright.
And it left McCann thoroughly frustrated as defensive lapses and a lack of clinical edge in front of goal proved costly for his team.
“I said it to the boys that it was probably the worst result of the season,” he said. “To be 3-0 up at home and then not win the game is simply not good enough.
“I’ve been saying all season that we need to take our chances. Even before I get on to the defensive side of things, I just don’t know how many chances we want. We should have scored 10 today and that’s not an exaggeration.
“But we just kept smashing the ball at the keeper, slicing at things, not putting it into the corner. But as soon as we get to 3-0, the game should be done, dead.
“There is no way we should be taking a point from the game. It’s hard to stand and talk about any positives because it feels like a defeat but we were so good going forward.
“We were the much better team apart from the three goals that we’ve just given to them.”
Wigan head coach Ryan Lowe praised his team for their fighting ability in a “crazy” game.
Lowe said his players were not themselves as they trailed 3-0 but he could not fault their heart to produce a comeback from a very difficult position in the final half hour of the game.
He said: “Where do you even start with that one? “We started brightly but we conceded two sloppy goals which was very disappointing.
“We were nowhere near after that. We got them in at half-time and made some tweaks but then we concede again.
“It wasn’t us, it didn’t look like us and we were nowhere near the levels but then the lads go and react and do what they should do and can do.
“Then we found ourselves at 3-2 and 3-3 with the momentum to try and win the game. It was a bit of a crazy game and I’m pleased that we’ve got the goals and earned the point because at 3-0 it wasn’t good.
“The lads have to take a lot of credit for that because they showed a lot of guts and determination and I’m really pleased with that.”
