Lee Grant was left bitterly disappointed by Huddersfield’s work on the ball as they fell to a last-gasp defeat at promotion rivals Stockport.
The Terriers looked to be on course for a hard-fought goalless draw despite creating precious few clear-cut chances in the game, but came away empty-handed thanks to Benony Breki Andresson’s strike in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Boss Grant said: “We’ve still got another gear to find when it comes to our bravery, particularly away from home.
“We have to go back to the drawing board on that, because for me, there’s more in the group, and right now we’re coming up short in these moments.
“We’d all have liked to have seen a more free-flowing performance, better quality when we had our moments to drive at them, and to be more secure when we had the ball in their half.
“I don’t think we showed enough confidence and self-belief, individually or collectively.
“Once they step across that line, they have to find the collective self-belief and energy to take the ball and impose themselves on what was always going to be a really tough challenge. We’re more than capable.
“So my disappointment is twofold: one, that we don’t see the game out as we should, and we should be talking here about a well-fought and hard-earned clean sheet.
“Then of course, we need to be better with the ball, which has been the same message for the past two weeks now.”
Stockport boss Dave Challinor was delighted with his side’s role-reversal following their late 1-0 defeat at Reading last weekend.
He said: “We’d certainly have liked not to have conceded last weekend, but it happened, and we’re a point better off than if it had been two draws.
“I think we deserved the result based on our endeavour and what we put into the game.
“I think sometimes you try to evolve and improve in certain aspects of the game and maybe lose focus a little bit on what’s got you success over the past four years.
“We’ve not meant to do that, but this week we’ve just had a little bit more focus on that. We looked in units at videos of the past three or four years and what that looked like, and that was a big part of what we did today.
“Our identity over the years has been built on our possession stuff, and we got back to that.
“We made some really good moments and didn’t make the most of them, but with the one ball we do put in with quality we get the winner.
“The lads have set the bar and we’ve got to make sure the bar doesn’t drop below that.”
