LIMERICK FC finished sixth in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table after suffering a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium on Friday night.
Gary McCabe’s 56th-minute penalty ended Limerick FC’s hopes of extending their three-game winning run and the prospect of securing a fifth-place finish on their second season back in the Premier Division.
Limerick will feel the penalty award was ‘soft’ in nature and the Blues also hit the crossbar with an Ian Turner piledriver from 30 yards in the 40th minute.
Limerick’s best chance of the second half came when Turner worked wonders down the left on 65 minutes to set up Shane Duggan but Hyland saved comfortably. Soon after Lee Jay Lynch made room for himself but his 20-yard effort lacked power and the keeper fumbled it over the line for a corner that came to nothing.
Rovers managed to maintain their slim advantage until full-time.
Limerick fans can look forward to the side playing their home games at the Markets Field next season.
