Wycombe boss Michael Duff frustrated after draw with Rotherham

Wycombe boss Michael Duff frustrated after draw with Rotherham

Wycombe manager Michael Duff admitted his frustration after his side were unable to hold on for all three points as they drew 1-1 at Rotherham on Saturday afternoon.

Irishman Jamie Mullins scored his second goal of the season and his first since early August to give The Chairboys the lead in the 14th minute.

But Wycombe were denied all three points in the 70th minute after Ar’Jany Martha found Kian Spence unmarked just eight yards out and the midfielder made no mistake as he volleyed home.

Duff said he believes his side should have taken all three points but on the balance of play a draw was a fair result.

He said: “It’s frustrating because I think we should win the game at 1-0.

“In the end, it’s probably a fair result because they came on strong in the second half.

“So in the face of it, away from home against the team at the top of the form league, it’s a good point.”

He admitted there are positives to take from the game.

“I think the first half is as good as we’ve been.

“We looked totally controlled in everything we did.”

“The word is frustration but there’s signs of progress.

“We could have gone under, we could have lost the game.

“We’ll probably wake up tomorrow morning and think ‘that was a good point’.”

Rotherham are now nine games unbeaten in League One and manager Matt Hamshaw was impressed with his team’s performance.

He added: “They’re a real good team with a real good squad, a real good manager on a real good run – as are we by the way.

“But I felt we were the ones posing questions.

“The opportunities they had were from counter attacks and that’s what I want.

“I want teams to come here and know that they’ve had a game.

“And I think that if you ask Wycombe today then they’ll say that they’ve been in a game.

“I thought we definitely didn’t deserve to lose the game.

“It’s another point, I’d have liked it to have been three, but that’s who I am.”

It was Spence’s second goal of the season that gave his side a share of the spoils.

He had a number of efforts on goal where he could have instead passed but Hamshaw says he’s happy to encourage his players to keep on shooting.

He added: “He should have slid a couple in the first half but I’m never going to have a pop at people shooting.

“I want people to get shots off.

“It was a really good finish.”
