Ben Knight’s first goal for Cambridge in the seventh minute of stoppage time earned his side a dramatic 2-1 win against Crewe.
The U’s had looked set to rue missed first-half opportunities as they fell behind shortly after half-time, only to hit back and win it at the death.
James Brophy crossed for both Liam Bennett and Mamadou Jobe to miss great headed chances before the break.
Crewe had barely threatened but went ahead nine minutes after the restart. Tommi O’Reilly’s free-kick was met by Emre Tezgel, who scored with a header that goalkeeper Jake Eastwood could not claw away.
Cambridge levelled eight minutes from time when Knight’s delivery was turned onto a post by Jobe, before the same player was able to bundle the rebound over the line.
Deep into added time, Ben Purrington was pulled down in the box and Knight stepped up to power his penalty into the bottom corner.
