Tom Eaves scores winner from the spot as Northampton hit back to beat Mansfield

Northampton returned to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory over Mansfield in League One.

Rhys Oates crashed in the opener but the Cobblers turned things around through two second-half goals as Jack Perkins levelled before Tom Eaves won it from the penalty spot.

It ended the Cobblers’ run of three straight defeats, including the FA Cup exit to League Two Oldham last weekend.

Jordan Thorniley nodded just wide inside the first minute before Stags goalkeeper Liam Roberts pulled off an excellent reaction save to keep out Cameron McGeehan’s close-range header.

Northampton had started well but Mansfield struck against the run of play in the 18th minute when Will Evans found Oates on the counter-attack and he fired into the bottom corner.

The visitors nearly had a second before half-time as Stephen McLaughlin’s near-post header went all the way across goal and wide.

Northampton levelled eight minutes into the second half when McGeehan flicked on Conor McCarthy’s cross and Perkins arrived at the back post to fire home.

George Maris curled narrowly wide but the Cobblers completed the turnaround through Eaves’ 74th-minute spot-kick after Ethan Wheatley was tripped in the box.
