Sandro Tonali has signed a contract extension at Newcastle until 2029 with the option of a further 12 months, the PA news agency understands.
Italy midfielder Tonali joined the Magpies from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55million on an initial five-year deal.
Tonali made an instant impression, scoring on his Premier League debut in a 5–1 win over Aston Villa, but was banned from playing football for 10 months in October 2023 for breaching Italian betting regulations.
The 25-year-old was later given a two-month suspended ban by the Football Association for 50 breaches of English betting rules.
Tonali returned from suspension at the start of the 2023-24 season, and helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup – the club’s first major domestic trophy for 70 years – and qualify for the Champions League.
He has made 67 appearances for the north-east club, scoring seven goals, and become a popular figure on Tyneside.
