Barrow manager Andy Whing was the happier of the two bosses after a goalless League Two draw at Oldham stretched his side’s unbeaten league run to four games.
Barrow were on the back foot for much of the game and although it was a game of half-chances in the first 45 minutes, they had the woodwork and goalkeeper Wyll Stanway to thank for a third clean sheet in four league games.
“It’s a very good point,” said Whing. “I don’t think we deserved any more, I don’t think we were brave enough on the ball.
“We looked a bit leggy at the end but an unbelievable performance to keep a clean sheet.
“It’s a tough place to come. They put you under pressure, long balls into the box and then they land on second balls.
“I thought we let them play their game too much and we just couldn’t get our stamp on the game and in our play, but we dug in and did the horrible stuff and we’re delighted with that.
“Three clean sheets in four, one goal conceded in four, we’ll get better on the ball but defensively we’re looking better and better week in, week out.”
Whing did, however, feel Barrow should have had a penalty for Manny Monthe’s challenge on substitute Charlie McCann, but he accepted that Oldham had the better of the contest.
“We didn’t deserve to win the game but resolutely we got ourselves a point,” the Barrow boss added.
Striker Michael Mellon had arguably the best of Oldham’s chances and was unlucky to be denied by the base of the post, two minutes into the second half. Joe Quigley was first to react to the rebound but it was scrambled off the line.
Veteran striker Joe Garner was introduced for his first appearance since helping to fire Oldham back to the Football League in the National League play-off final at Wembley – and he caused problems.
But it was defender Will Sutton who could have won it in stoppage-time before he had a powerful header saved by Stanway.
“We’d have to say we were the better team at everything apart from we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net,” said Oldham manager Micky Mellon.
“You’ve got to score goals and take chances to win games. But in terms of performance, we kept them under massive pressure (in) the second half as well.
“The only thing that was missing was the finishing touch.
“You would have to say that Barrow would be absolutely delighted by getting something out of it.
“We’re gutted that we only got a draw, so that probably tells you the story.”
