Devante Cole’s late goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Port Vale and denied AFC Wimbledon a fifth Sky Bet League One win in a row.
The Valiants almost capitalised on some early pressure when George Byers leapt high to meet Ronan Curtis’ excellent delivery but saw his header strike the crossbar.
Wimbledon’s first sustained period of possession almost ended badly when Isaac Ogundere miscontrolled the ball on the halfway line, allowing George Hall through on goal. He tried to find a team-mate instead of taking a shot himself, only for Jake Reeves to get back just in time to intercept the cross.
Reeves fired a free-kick inches over the bar at the start of the second half, before some slick passing put Omar Bugiel through on goal. The forward went close with a header, forcing an excellent reaction save from Valiants goalkeeper Ben Amos.
A strong second-half showing paid off for the hosts in the 72nd minute when Antwoine Hackford pounced on a loose ball inside the box before finding the bottom-right corner.
However, just as Johnnie Jackson’s side appeared to be cruising towards victory, Alistair Smith carelessly gave away possession on the edge of his own penalty area.
That allowed Hall to tee up Cole for an 86th-minute equaliser, which extended Vale’s unbeaten run to five games.
