Do or die for Limerick FC, Newcastle West aim to break Munster hoodoo and Na Piarsaigh boss praises team’s character are the big talking points in today’s Limerick sports update.

GAA - Newcastle West aim for first win since 2008 for Limerick teams in Munster

It’s the turn of Limerick SFC winners Newcastle West to embark on their provincial voyage this weekend. Limerick football champions Newcastle West will have to travel to Clonmel to face Tipperary champions Clonmel Commercials in their home ground at 2pm. The west Limerick side will be bidding to end six years without success for the county champions in the province - no Limerick side has tasted success in the competition since Dromcollogher-Broadford lifted the title in 2008. A win in this game will earn a trip to Clare outfit Miltown Malbay in the Munster semi-final.

Soccer - Limerick face win or bust against Sligo on Friday

Limerick FC must defeat Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on Friday night and hope Drogheda fail to beat Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght in order to secure a Premier Division relegation play-off. Bottom-placed Limerick remain two points behind Drogheda Utd going into the final series of regular season games on Friday night. Should Limerick beat Sligo, then the Drogs must beat Shamrock Rovers to remain ahead of the Blues in the table. Limerick FC and Drogheda Utd have the same goal difference. Should Limerick secure a relegation play-off it will be against the winners of the First Division play-off tie between Finn Harps and UCD.

GAA - Na Piarsiagh boss full of praise for his charges

Na Piarsaigh manager Shane O’Neill was loud in praise of the character of his players after they battled back from nine points down at half time to earn a victory over Sixmilebridge in the Munster club SHC. The 3-11 to 1-15 win in Sixmilebridge books a Munster semi final for Na Piarsaigh against Thurles Sarsfields “We have a trust in these guys,” gasped O’Neill after his side hit the final four points to snatch victory.“It’s the character of these boys - they keep getting questioned, particularly in our own county but we were nine points down and to win by two is great,” said O’Neill.

GAA - Cusack leaves RTE and joins Fitzgerald at Clare

Former Cork goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack has thrown his lot in with Davy Fitzgerald’s Clare. Cusack will take on the roles of coach and selector with the Clare senior hurling team. The Cork man has the onerous task of reviving a Clare panel that have completely under performed since winning the All Ireland in 2013. Cusack has impressed many with his in depth analysis on The Sunday Game but it remains to be seen if he can put into practice what he has preached for the last few years.
