LIMERICK football champions Newcastle West fell at the first hurdle of the Munster club SFC this Sunday - Newcastle West 1-7, Clonmel Commercials 0-12.

The 7/2 outsiders from west Limerick looked on course to end six seasons without a win for the Limerick representatives when 1-7 to 0-6 ahead with six minutes to play.

But they then conceded six successive points to see Clonmel Commercials go ahead for the first time in the contest and snatch victory in this provincial quarter final.

Newcastle West got off to a dreams tart in Clonmel with 1-1 inside three minutes.

But then Mike Quilligan’s side went the next 27-minutes without a score to leave the game, 1-1 to 0-3 at half time.

The Newcastle West goal came in the third minute from Jamie Lee when he pounced on a loose ball after towering full forward Mike McMahon had knocked down a Cian Sheehan delivery.

The goal came just two minutes after Steven Brosnan had opened the scoring.

It was an opening period bossed by Newcastle West, but they were left to count the cost of six first half wides.

After a low scoring first half, it was Newcastle West that looked back to their Limerick SFC form on the resumption.

Two Lee frees had the game 1-3 to 0-4 at the mid-point of the second half.

Then came a purple patch with Stephen Kelly and Iain Corbett scoring from play.

When Kelly added two fine pointed frees, it was 1-7 to 0-6 to Newcastle West with 54-minutes played.

The wides tally was up to nine now and Clonmel were six minutes without a score but still the home side found a run of scores.

Two minutes from the end, their fourth successive point had the game level for the first time, 1-7 to 0-10.

Then in injury time, they found two winning points.

There was a shout for a Newcastle West penalty but Paul Hannan also saw a chance spurned.
