THERE were two all-Limerick ties drawn in the first rounds of the Munster Schools Senior and Junior Cup competitions which took place at Thomond Park on Wednesday night.
Ardscoil Ris, beaten finalists in the Senior Cup final on St Patrick’s Day, will face local rivals St Munchin’s College in the opening round of both the Senior and Junior Cups.
Meanwhile, Glenstal Abbey, semi-finalists in the Senior Cup last season, will face neighbours Castletroy College in the opening round of the Senior and Junior Cup competitions.
Elsewhere, 2013 and 2014 Senior Cup winners Crescent College Comprehensive will host Cork heavyweights CBC in the first round of both the Senior and Junior Cups.
Senior Cup holders Rockwell College will take on Bandon Grammar School, who have been elevated to ‘A’ school status, in the opening rounds of the Senior and Junior Cups.
First round fixtures are set to be played as double headers with sides facing each other in both Senior and Junior Cup competitions on the same day at the same venue.
St Clement’s College will hope to advance to a first round meeting with PBC in both the Senior and Junior Cups by defeating High School, Clonmel in the final of the preliminary round series at Clanwilliam Park on Wednesday next, December 2.
The winners of the five first round games will advance to the quarter-finals of the Munster Schools Senior and Junior Cups. They will be joined by three of the first round losers, one of which will be decided by an draw, and two by virtue of two play-off games.
Ten schools have won the Munster Schools Senior Cup competition since it was first competed for in 1909 - the title has come to Cork on 57 occasions, Tipperary have claimed the trophy 27 times, while 5 Limerick Schools have been victorious on 22 occasions.
