Bromley boss Andy Woodman: We gifted Chesterfield their goals

Andy Woodman expressed his frustration as Bromley had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at home to Chesterfield.

Michael Cheek’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Armando Dobra before Liam Mandeville put the visitors ahead.

Bromley earned a point through Chey Dunkley’s own goal 11 minutes from time but it was not enough to satisfy their boss.

Woodman said: “That was a game where two sides didn’t want to lose and lose ground on one another. But the disappointing thing is we gifted Chesterfield their goals and didn’t clear our lines.

“This football club has been built on clean sheets and that’s what I now need to address.

“We need to make teams work harder and tidy up a bit and put a bit more respect on getting clean sheets.

“You have to be on 24/7 and maybe we’ve gone away from that for a bit.

“It was a cagey match that was always going to be decided on key moments but I am glad that we didn’t let heads drop. We got the equaliser and that was the least we deserved because we didn’t deserve to lose this game.”

The home side had the better opportunities in the early exchanges and took the lead in the 16th minute when Cheek reacted quickest to hook a ball over and beyond Zach Hemming.

Despite Bromley’s general dominance, Chesterfield levelled the game up six minutes before the interval when good work from Will Grigg saw him set up Dobra for a smart finish into the bottom corner.

And the Spireites completed the turnaround midway through the half with their second shot on target when Mandeville profited from poor defensive play to score.

Dobra could have made it three with 15 minutes to go but was denied by Grant Smith.

And Bromley took advantage of that by levelling when Mitch Pinnock’s corner was bundled into his own net by Dunkley.

Chesterfield assistant manager Gary Roberts said: “At 2-1 up at a place like Bromley we needed the third to make the game safe and we had a chance and didn’t take it.

“From there you know that Bromley are going to bombard you in the final 10 minutes with set plays and we didn’t deal with it well enough.

“Bromley is a hard place to come to and play to a tempo but I thought once we got the equaliser we set about out business well, the players worked hard and tested the Bromley backline more than we did at Walsall.

“We’re only nine games in and in a nice position to kick on – we play Newport next and if we win that we are looking very good.”
