Basement club Peterborough claim first League One win of season against Wycombe

Peterborough claimed their first win of the Sky Bet League One season after registering a 2-1 victory against Wycombe.

First-half goals from recent additions Matthew Garbett and Jimmy-Jay Morgan proved to be enough to secure all three points for the Posh, with Fred Onyedinma pulling one back for the visitors soon after the restart.

Despite the win, Darren Ferguson’s men remain at the foot of the table and Wycombe are still in 19th place.

The first chance of the game fell to Onyedinma, whose shot was well saved by Alex Bass after the ball was threaded through by Sam Bell.

But it was Peterborough who took the lead in the 21st minute, when Garbett fired home superbly from distance for his first goal for the club.

The hosts doubled their advantage shortly before half-time as Chelsea loanee Morgan put away the rebound after Mikki van Sas had done excellently to keep out Harry Leonard’s header.

Wycombe came flying out of the traps after the break and reduced the deficit in the 49th minute thanks to Onyedinma’s strike following a nod down from Bell.

The Chairboys created plenty of chances to snatch an equaliser, but Peterborough managed to hold on to the huge relief of the home fans.
