Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb was frustrated at his side’s poor start before they rescued a point in Saturday’s 1-1 League Two draw against 10-man Port Vale.
The hosts went behind to Jayden Stockley’s second-minute goal before Armando Dobra equalised after 76 minutes to claim a share of the spoils.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute when Mitch Clark was shown a straight red card after committing a foul.
Webb said: “Frustrating. I think you sometimes have to look at the whole game. What I mean by that is the way we started. A few mistakes led up to the goal.
“But I thought, actually, first half we were into it and second half we were really good. Now yes, did the 10 men help us? Of course it did, but it doesn’t mean it helps you to win the game.
“We kept playing the way we want to play. A bit frustrated we didn’t test their goalie more than that, but you know when you go one-nil down at home against a team in the top three and end up getting a point, you can’t be too disappointed.
“If we started that first half a little bit better, we’d like to think we’d have got three points.
“When we equalised, the place was rocking and it’s just a shame after that we couldn’t get a ball to just drop to us to get that win.”
Port Vale boss Darren Moore felt that the sending off was the turning point.
Moore said: “Obviously he (Clark) is devastated in there. He’s got it, but you’ve got to get it right and the ball’s come to him, he’s come to put his foot on the ball, but his foot’s rolled over the ball and caught the boy’s ankle flush.
“So when you look at it, it’s a red card, but there’s no intentional malice from Mitch’s point of view.
“We’ve had to accept it. We were dangerous and they were really worried, with the breakouts that we were having and we then had to sort of change shape a bit and sort of go to a deep block.
“I just thought the boys were excellent after that really.”
Moore refused to blame Tom Sang – whose error led to Chesterfield’s equaliser – and he added: “When we win games, we win games for the team. When we draw games, we draw games for the team. We’ve done that today.
“He’ll learn from it. Nine times out of 10, he finds a pass so he clears his lines. But that one moment today sort of gifted them the goal and got them back into the game.
“I thought we were solid today. I don’t think there’s many teams that’s going to come into this backyard here and put in a solid performance like that.”
