HOLDERS Garryowen will begin the defence of the Munster Senior Cup in September with a home tie against city rivals Thomond.
And should Tom Tierney’s ‘light blues’ overcome their local rivals in their quarter-final clash, they face the prospect of a trip to Cork to take on either Cork Constitution or Dolphin.
Traditional club heavyweights Garryowen claimed the ODM Munster Senior Cup for the 38th time in their decorated history, when defeating Bruff at Thomond Park last October.s
As provincial senior cup winners, Garryowen earned the right to compete in the Bateman All-Ireland Cup semi-finals. And the ‘light blues’ went on to defeat Ulster kingpins Dungannon in the Cup final played at Templeville Road.
The meeting of Garryowen and Thomond is the only all-Limerick tie in the first round of the Munster Senior Cup which takes place on the week ending September 15.
Stephen Keogh’s Shannon side travel to East Cork to make on Midleton at the last 16 stage of the competition.
Should ‘the Parish’ side get the better of their Cork opponents, they will face the winners of the first round tie featuring Young Munster and UCC.
Munsters’ claimed their seventh ODM Munster Senior Cup title in 2010 when recording a deserved 22-13 final victory over UCC at Musgrave Park.
Elsewhere, AIL Division 1A side UL-Bohemian travel to Ormond Park to take on Nenagh Ormond, while Old Crescent are also on the road, facing a trip to Cork to meet Highfield.
2010-11 Cup winners Bruff will host Cashel at Kilballyowen in another mouth-watering tie.
Meanwhile, in the traditional season-opening competition, the Limerick Charity Cup, holders Young Munster will begin their bid to complete a four-in-a-row of Cup successes when they host Old Crescent at Tom Clifford Park in the quarter-finals on the week-end of August 26.
Munsters’ made it three wins in the competition when defeating Shannon 25-13 in last season’s delayed final at Dooradoyle in December.
Mike Prendergast’s Munsters’ were full value for their win on a bitterly cold night, outscoring their opponents by three tries to one.
Last season’s Charity Cup finalists, Shannon, host Thomond at Coonagh in another of the quarter-final ties.
Elsewhere, Bruff will host UL-Bohemian at Kilballyowen Park, while Garryowen entertain Nenagh Ormond at Dooradoyle.
