ST Munchin’s advanced to the last eight stage of the Munster Schools Junior Cup after securing an impressive 15-3 win over Bandon Grammar School in their play-off tie played in Bandon this Wednesday.
St Munchin’s College rallied strongly in the second half to set up a first round meeting with Limerick rivals Castletroy College on Thursday, February 6.
Bandon enjoyed a 3-0 half-time lead, thanks to a well-struck penalty goal from the boot of Ethan Greene.
However, two second half tries from the Corbally side secured their progress in the Cup.
St Munchin’s upped the tempo in the second half with some excellent work by Charlie Carmody, Aaron McNamara and Jason Lipper in the pack.
Twice Munchin’s opted for touch from penalties close to the line and each time they mauled the ball towards the line, Bandon were penalised. On the third occasion the ball was left out and wing forward Charlie Carmody crashed over in the corner for a try.
The Limerick side moved five points to the good when centre Jason Kiely kicked a penalty goal. St Munchin’s put the tie beyond their doubt when Kiely scored a terrific solo try with five minutes remaining. Kiely also added the conversion to help Corbally see out the game with a degree of comfort.
