ST Munchin’s fell to a heartbreaking 13-6 loss to Rockwell College in the Munster Schools Senior Cup semi-final on Tuesday afternoon.
ST Munchin’s College’s bid to make the final of the Munster Schools Senior Cup for a second successive year ended in heartbreak when the Corbally side lost out to a last gasp converted try by a hat-trick seeking Rockwell College side at Clanwilliam FC this Tuesday.
St Munchin’s looked all set to secure a replay when holding their fancied opponents 6-6 as an absorbing semi-final ticked into added time. However, Rockwell made one final assault on their opponents in the 37th minute and full-back Steve McMahon evaded the clutches of the St Munchin’s defence to score the match-winning try which centre Rory Parata converted.
St Munchin’s, who suffered an agonising one-point defeat to Rockwell in last season’s final, will feel that they needed to make more of the first half dominance they enjoyed when playing with the breeze.
Despite enjoying the lions-share of possession and territory, St Munchin’s were only on level terms 3-3 at the break. The St Munchin’s points came from a Shane Airey penalty after a high tackle on their excellent centre Dan Goggin.
Rockwell eased 6-3 in front 10 minutes into the second half, but gritty St Munchin’s responded superbly and a second Airey penalty on 47 minutes looked to have secured a replay for the Limerick side only for Rockwell to dash those hopes in added time.
