ARDSCOIL Ris reached the Munster Schools Senior Cup final for only the second time in their history, thanks to a deserved 11-7 semi-final victory over local rivals St Munchin’s College at St Mary’s RFC this Wednesday.
An injury time drop goal from out-half David O’Mahony sealed Ardscoil Ris’ place in the St Patrick’s Day decider when the North Circular Road side will face either holders Crescent College Comprehensive or 2008 champions Castletroy College.
The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides showing obvious signs of nerves which was understandable given how much was at stake in this Limerick derby.
Wind-assisted St Munchin’s College led 7-0 at half-time, with prop Peter Meyer bagging the game’s opening try. The Corbally side had secured good field position through a brilliantly executed maul, from which St Munchin’s made at least 25 metres before it was hauled down illegally.
Crucially, Ardscoil Ris hit back with a try of their own just three minutes after the re-start when centre Paul McNamara struck for a precious five-pointer.
While O’Mahony missed the conversion, he did slot a 56th minute penalty goal to held Ardscoil into a narrow lead for the first time at 8-7.
While Ardscoil finished the half strongly, enjoying the lions-share of possesion and territory, they were unable to add to their tally of points until O’Mahony landed a sweetly-struck drop goal in stoppage time to seal victory.
Ardscoil Ris will now await the winners of the second semi-final between Crescent College and Castletroy College which takes place at Rosbrien this Friday, 3pm.
