Proposal for binmen on bikes to be deployed in Limerick

LIMERICK City and County Council could deploy binmen on bikes to service hard-to-reach waste receptacles across Limerick.

It comes following a suggestion made to the local authority’s litter management plan.

At the March monthly council meeting, members were shown an update on the three year strategy, dated from 2023 to 2026.

A suggestion came in from conservation architect Cait Ni Cheallachain that cargo bikes - bicycles with carrying facilities - be used to access bins which are not reachable with conventional bin lorries.

In response, council chief executive Dr Pat Daly wrote: “The introduction of cleansing staff with cargo bikes could be considered in some locations, additional resources would be required. These are not currently available but may be considered in future”.

The council says its litter plan recognises the persistent challenge of litter at both local and national level.

“The focus remains on reducing and managing litter to provide a cleaner and more attractive environment for the people of Limerick,” the authority adds.

Within the plan are objectives and actions relating to awareness, prevention control, and enforcement of littering from 2023 to 2026.
