The district’s Cathaoirleach threatened to suspend standing orders

THE CATHAOIRLEACH of the Newcastle West Municipal District has threatened to suspend standing orders if councillors are “not happy” with the responses provided by council officials.

At July’s meeting of the Newcastle West Municipal District, Cathaoirleach Councillor Liam Galvin said that he “will be suspending standing orders if people aren’t happy with responses”.

This followed a range of councillors expressing dissatisfaction to the executive’s response to a Notice of Motion submitted by Councillor John Sheahan.

Standing orders outline the procedures and rules governing how council meetings are conducted.

He moved at the meeting that Limerick City and County Council “use the powers it has over dereliction to do whatever is necessary to bring the two derelict commercial units in Ardmoyle estate, Carrigkerry into use either as commercial or residential”.

Cllr Sheahan described the site as a “complete and utter eyesore,” dubbing it a “Celtic Tiger disaster”.

He explained that the owners of the units had had “no engagement” with the council, and asked what the “overall plan” was for dealing with the issue.

Jayne Leahy, senior executive officer, Property Services at LCCC replied: “The properties are currently on the Derelict Site Register.

“The properties can be considered for compulsory acquisition under the Derelict Site Act, 1990.

“LCCC will continue to review this derelict site case.”

Cllr Galvin seconded the motion, adding that the sewer was “in shocking condition”.

He mentioned that this site had been an issue for 10-15 years, and suggested the council “drive on with the process there”.

Councillor Jerome Scanlan commented that he was “not happy with the response we got”.

Cllr Galvin said he “will be suspending standing orders if people aren’t happy with responses.”
