‘We are suffering’ - Limerick councillors file motion on roads budget allocations

COUNCILLORS in the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District have passed a motion calling for a change to how Limerick City and County Council allocates its roads budget.

The motion was brought forward by Independent Ireland councillor John O’Donoghue at the district’s January meeting.

It calls on the council to allocate funding for roads based on how many kilometres of road there is in each municipal district.

Cllr O’Donoghue said that currently, a “sizable chunk” of funding received from the Department of Transport goes to the Metropolitan District.

He stated that when councillors in other areas raise issues with their roads, they are told there is no money.

He gave an example of a road which, although it had grass growing in the middle of it, was not able to be looked at due to a lack of funds.

“We are suffering big time”, Cllr O’Donoghue said, adding: “All I want is a small bit of equality.”

Given that the motion involved other municipal districts, it was agreed that the motion be brought forward to the full meeting of Limerick City and County Council.

It is understood that councillors in Cappamore-Kilmallock will file a similar motion later this week.
