MAYOR of Limerick John Moran is to make two visits to the USA this month to promote Shannonside.

This week, the directly elected mayor is in New York leading a focused investment delegation, where he will meet representatives of IDA Ireland, the government's job creation agency, alongside Enterprise Ireland.

The second time he has flown the Limerick flag across the pond during his mayoralty,  Mayor Moran says this trip is "about telling Limerick’s story to a range of other stakeholders who we believe, in one way or another, can help us in continuing to make our city and county a better place to live, work, learn and invest in."

"Throughout the week, I will be meeting with a range of individuals and organisations who share a belief in Limerick’s potential - including the Friends of Limerick network, whose ongoing support for our city in New York is invaluable to us," he said.

On top of this, the first citizen will visit New Brunswick in New Jersey, which has shared a twinning agreement with Limerick since 1999.

This is with a view to developing a holistic international strategy for Limerick.

"It will be an opportunity to explore how we can revitalise and strengthen the long-standing connection with New Brunswick in a way that benefits both of us into the future," he added.

Mayor Moran will attend a fundraising event for Munster Rugby, following on from his meeting with the province's chief executive Ian Flanagan in City Hall last month.

"It really is a testament to the international strength of our sporting culture that such an event can be held in New York. It will be a powerful reminder of the strong connection between Limerick and Munster Rugby, and how sport continues to unite and promote our city, our county and our region on a global scale," he said.

And, there will also be a visit to a fashion incubator in Brooklyn.

It comes with one of his aims in his mayoral programme to open a similar facility in the former garda station at Mary Street in the city centre.

"There’s a real opportunity this week for us to bring back practical insights from Brooklyn to help shape a vision for a Fashion Quarter in our own city," Mayor Moran said.

Later this month, he will be back in New York, at Bethpage Black golf course on Long Island.

Here, he will witness America's hosting of the Ryder Cup, with the next tournament of course returning to Ireland to take place in Adare Manor in 2027.

"We are continuing to tell Limerick’s story at home and abroad," the mayor concluded.
