Mixed-use project kicks off at site to the east of Limerick

A FIRM where former Limerick senior hurler Shane Dowling serves as managing director has kicked off construction of a new residential and commercial development to the east of the city.

Southpiar Properties has acquired land in Towlerton, Ballysimon, which has been rapidly growing in recent years.

And work has begun by Homeland on the first phase of the project.

Five retail units are planned alongside around 16,000 square feet of office space. On top of this, 48 new apartments will be built in the next number of weeks, adding a significant new residential element to the overall project.

Mr Dowling who hopes the development will bring over 60 jobs to the area, said it represents an extremely exciting opportunity. “The area of Towlerton is growing at a fast pace, with the new hospital, the school, Lidl and also the recent planning permission for Whitebox, with a couple of hundred units planned. We are very lucky to be in a fantastic location here, and we can’t wait to start talking to people. We hope to create well over 60 jobs when the development is complete,” he said.

“We are also delighted that we will be starting the development of the 48 apartments in the next number of weeks, which will add another important element to the project.”

Southpiar Properties chief executive John Godfrey said the project was the result of significant work by the company and represented an important development for Limerick. “This is a project that we have worked very hard on over the last couple of months, and we look forward to seeing the progress as things develop over the next couple of months. This is a positive news story for Limerick, and we are delighted to officially mark the start of this development,” he said before paying tribute to everyone who has helped make the project happen and thanking Mayor John Moran for turning the sod.

The development comes at a time of continued growth in the Towlerton and Ballysimon area. It’s already home to the Bon Secours Hospital, a branch of Lidl and Limerick’s first Educate Together Secondary School. Nearby, Kirkland, the same developers to work in Towlerton, have sought permission to develop a major new housing scheme of 403 apartments at the Parkway Valley site at Dublin Road. An

Coimisiún Pleanála is currently deliberating on the plans at the long-vacant land.
