A MAJOR new housing development in Newcastle West has been given the go-ahead.

Council planners have given conditional planning permission to developers for the construction of 53 homes at Churchtown Road in the county town.

It’s an extension to the existing development at Carrig Desmond for which homes are on sale.

According to the application, Rockspring Developments sought permission for the new houses which will in a mix of semi-detached and terraced units.

The development will comprise of six semi-detached three-bed dwellings, 32 terraced three-bed houses, and 15 terraced two bed homes.

Councillor Michael Collins, who has just been re-elected to the Newcastle West district has welcomed the planning green light.

“We have demand for additional housing so it's very very welcome. The biggest challenge for us is to ensure the housing can come on stream as quick as possible. Any housing is welcome in Newcastle West.”

Limerick council planners had initially expressed concern about a “monotonous” streetscape, with all the homes finishes in the same manner.

However, the architects representing the developers informed the council they had changed the design of the brick detail to each front-entrance door.

“We now also additionally propose three different paint colours to highlight the individual blocks,” they added.

Council gave the development the go-ahead subject to 20 planning conditions.
