THE PREFERRED corridor for the new Limerick to Cork road has been revealed by planners.
In an update, issued this Monday, they say the original 500 metre corridor has now been reduced to 200 metres meaning some properties located close to the route will not now be acquired.
A further reduction of the corridor identifying the proposed ‘fence line’ will take place over the next 12 months.
The preferred route will see a new interchange being constructed close to the current junction where the M20 meets the N21 and N20 at Attyflin, Patrickswell.
The preferred route will see the new road, which will cost more than €1b to complete, being constructed to the west of Croom, Banogue, Rourke's Cross and Charleville.
Limerick City and County Council, which is leading the project, says 100km of active travel infrastructure, for walking and cycling, will be constructed as part of the works rather than the 80km which had been planned.
A number of transport hubs with EV charging facilities, will be built at locations along the new road to facilitate interchange to public transport services, car sharing and active travel.
Planners have also confirmed a freight hub will be provided - in Charleville or Mallow - with HGV parking, welfare, and en-route EV charging facilities.
Engineers, who will hold a number of information webinars for stakeholders and members of the public this week and next week, say they hope to submit the project to Government by the end of next year after which a formal planning application will be lodged with An Bord Pleanála.
Construction work is not expected to begin for a number of years.
