LIMERICK Sports Partnership has welcomed confirmation of a €744,901 core funding allocation for 2026, announced as part of a record €33.36 million national investment in sport by Government through Sport Ireland.

It has also been granted an additional €17,965 for research.

The funding forms part of the highest-ever level of Core grant investment in Irish sport, with €12.66 million allocated nationally to Local Sports Partnerships in 2026 - a 5.9% increase on 2025 levels - supporting the delivery of inclusive sport and physical activity programmes in communities across the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, TD, and Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy, Charlie McConalogue, TD, who confirmed that 2026 also marks the first year of Sport Ireland’s new three-year multi-annual funding model.

This new approach is designed to support improved planning, workforce stability and more strategic use of resources across the sport sector.

Welcoming the announcement, Phelim Macken, Manager of Limerick Sports Partnership, said: “This funding is extremely welcome and provides vital stability for the work of Limerick Sports Partnership in 2026.

“Core funding allows us to plan with confidence, support our staff and tutors, and continue delivering inclusive, high-quality sport and physical activity opportunities for people of all ages and abilities across Limerick.

“As part of a record national investment in sport, this allocation reflects the value of Local Sports Partnerships in reaching communities and removing barriers to participation.”

Limerick Sports Partnership works in collaboration with Sport Ireland, Limerick City and County Council, National Governing Bodies of Sport, clubs, schools and community organisations to increase participation in sport and physical activity, with a particular focus on inclusion, equality of access and lifelong engagement.

The 2026 allocation will support Limerick Sports Partnership programmes that encourage participation among children and young people, older adults, people with disabilities, women and girls, minority groups and communities experiencing disadvantage, while strengthening the capacity of local clubs and volunteers.
