PLUCKY Limerick FC secured a battling 1-1 draw with a Liverpool FC XI in an entertaining friendly played before an estimated 2,000 spectators at Jackman Park on Monday night.
After a nervy start, Limerick FC looked the better side in the opening half, creating the lions-share of goalscoring opportunities against a Liverpool XI which included a number of players who boasted first team experience with the English Premier League giants.
The home side took the lead mid-way through the half with a smashing goal. The exciting Garbhan Coughlan gained possession inside the Liverpool half before playing an inch perfect pass through the heart of the visitors’ defence for the in-rushing Garry Sheahan. The Kilcornan striker showed admirable composure to slide the ball under the advancing Liverpool goalkeeper, Peter Golacsi to score.
The Blues could well have doubled their advantage before the break with Rory Gaffney and Coughlan going close to scoring. Coughlan’s dipping volley just before the break was superbly tipped over the crossbar by Golacsi, who was on the substitutes bench for ‘The Reds’ FA Cup semi-final clash with Everton at Wembley last month.
Liverpool were level two minutes after the re-start when their highly impressive frontman Nathan Eccleston ghosted in on the left before finishing superbly.
The visitors dominated possession through the remainder of the half as Limerick FC emptied their replacements’ bench.
However, despite the visitors bossing long stages of the second half, they were unable to find a winner.
