New wave of cruelty in Limerick against donkeys

New wave of cruelty in Limerick against donkeys

THE GARRYOWEN area of Limerick is shocked by the cold-blooded cutting of a live donkey, around his hind legs, by vandals who invaded the area on Sunday. And there is much praise in Rathbane for the local housewife who the same day saved another donkey from boys who were beating it with an iron rod. There is also a report of a cat hanged in Janesboro and an attempted hanging of another cat from the same household there. The Garryowen incident occurred late on Sunday night, and gardai found the donkey in a frightened state and roaring.

When the ISPCA inspector Mr Donal Moloney, examined the animal, he found that it has razor type cuts running in a circular fashion around the exit for passing water and had not lost much blood.

What the intention of the vandals was is not certain as a castration would have necessitated incisions in a different part.

It is expected that the animal will make a complete recovery.

Also in the pound with the donkey is another one which Mrs Reidy, a housewife, rescued from vandals.

She saw them beating the donkey with an iron bar, ran out and chased them away from the terrace.

Water supply improvement for city to tune of £220k

A SCHEME to improve the water supply to Limerick city is already far advanced, with works costing about £220,000 already carried out.

The spending of another £200,000 is scheduled for the new treatment works at Clareville, which is in the charge of the Corporation.

In this case, progress has reached the stage of the actual receipt of quotations for equipment which will be installed there.

The completion of a new 30-inch rising main from Charleville waterworks to Newcastle reservoir has accounted for £208,000 of the money already spent.

The remaining £12,000 spent has gone on the “interim scheme for water treatment city”.

This has boosted water treatment to 6.5 million gallons a day. There are a number of other works in this area for water supplies which are said to be in the planning stage.

One is called the City Environs scheme. In this consultants are preparing a preliminary report for the County Council for the construction of a new trunk main from the Tipperary Road to Raheen, via Ballyclough.

This includes the provision of water storage.
