A LIMERICK rower has placed fourth in the Lightweight Men's Double 'A' final at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Castleconnell native Rory O'Neill, currently of UL Rowing Club, teamed up with Ciaran Purdy, of Queens University Belfast Boat Club for the prestigious championships. The pair just missed out on the medals after sitting sixth for large portions of the race.
With 300m to go Ireland put themselves in bronze position and were actively gaining on Spain for that silver spot, but disaster struck only 50m out as the Limerick man's oar caught a boat stopping crab pulling them back out of the podium positions.
Highly rated Limerick rower O'Neill and Purdy made their debut in the competition on Thursday, winning their heat to progress straight into the A/B Semi's.
The pair then put on an impressive display in Saturday's semi's to gain their place in the 'A' final. Limerick's O'Neill and Belfast's Purdy are now fourth in the world in the U23 age group in the men's lightweight double sculls.
