Congrats Maura: Congratulations to Listowel’s Maura Halpin who’s parents hailed from the parish of Knocknagoshel on her never ending success in Athletes. Maura Listowel’s golden girl and one of Kerry’s top Athletes both on and track and field , received her most Prestige award of her entire carrier in recognition for her outstanding contribution with Athletics and the many other voluntary organisations she gives her time to. She was presented by President Michael D Higgins of the gold Gaisce medal , at a ceremony in St. Patrick’s hall in Dublin Castle on Tuesday November 12th last, Maura had got the Bronze and Silver Gaisce medals already under her belt . In return Maura presented the President with two books , one was a beautiful book on Poetry by Moyvane scribe Gabriel Fitzmaurice and the other a book of humour and wit by Listowel’s Billy Keane. Maura was accompanied to the Castle by her friend from her school days in Tarbert Comprehensive School Elam Wren, and also by the Mayor of Listowel Jimmy Moloney .Both Maura’s parents were from Knocknagoshel, her mother Mary Tobin Halpin hails from Loughfouder where M aura’s gran mother Clara Brosnan (Baby Tobin) still reside and her father the late Dave Halpin was from Lotts, Knocknagoshel. A great day was had by one and all “Maura quipped this is the icing on the cake.
UNVEILING: A monument erected by Knocknagoshel Fine Gael Club to the memory of the Free State Forces who were killed and injured in a trap mine in early March 1923 at Baranarig wood was unveiled on Sunday last. The unveiling was performed by Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD.
LATE MICK REGAN: The death occurred during the week of Mick Regan, Scalp, and Brosna. His remains were removed from O’Donnell’s Funeral Home to Brosna Parish Church and burial was in the cemetery Ballydesmond. Mick was most popular and in his day an outstanding worker. Sincere sympathy is extended to all his relatives and friends.
LATE CON O’CONNOR: The death took place at the weekend of Con O’Connor, Lotts, and Knocknagoshel. Con’s remains were removed from Dave Leahy’s Funeral Home to St Mary’s Church, Knocknagoshel and burial was in the New Cemetery, Knocknagoshel. Con was in his late 60s. Sincere sympathy is extended to all Con’s relatives and friends.
LATE NED CAVANAGH: The death recently of Ned Cavanagh in Tralee, rekindled his time working in the Land Commission and he operating in these parts. Ned was involved in the last division of land in Ireland.
NORTH KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: Knocknagoshel senior footballers had a most impressive win on Sunday last when defeating St Senans in their replayed North Kerry Senior Football Quarterfinal. They now face Listowel Emmet’s in the semi-final.
RUGBY: Knockbrack brothers Garry and Kieran Downey are presently starring for Castleisland Rugby team . Both are leading lights with the Mall footballers.
