JUNIOR HURLERS QUALIFY FOR COUNTY SEMI FINAL IN EXTRA TIME: Blackrock qualified for the County Semi Final when they defeated Pallasgreen in the Quarter Final of the County Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship game played in Bruff on Sunday last by virtue of a five point win after extra time was required, by 1.17 to 0.15 after the sides finished level after sixty minutes of play, Blackrock 1.10 Pallasgreen 0.13.

It was Pallasgreen who had the better of the early exchanges, with three points from two frees and one from play, after Mike Roche had the opening score of the game with a pointed free for the South Champions. Both sides exchanged two points each from frees, Pat Heffernan and Mike Roche the Blackrock marksmen. Pallasgreen had a great chance of a goal but was cleared Pallasgreen were now on top and added two points from play before Mike Roche pointed a Blackrock 65, after a Pat Heffernan low hit free was deflected for the 65. Roche was on target once again for Blackrock with a pointed free from midfield before Pallasgreen restored a two point lead. Both sides had a number of scoring chances go wide. Pallasgreen had a point from play which was replied to with a pointed free for Blackrock from Pat Heffernan to leave the half time score Pallasgreen 0.09 Blackrock 0.07. The second half started with a lot of intensity

Blackrock were first to attack and won a free which went wide of the post from Pat Heffernan, there then followed a stoppage in play because of an altercation in the middle of the field involving a number of players, which resulted in two players, one from each side, being ordered off on a second yellow card offence. Play resumed with Blackrock now on top and they reduced the deficit with a pointed free from Mike Roche. From the resulting puck out Blackrock won possession in midfield and David Healy sent the ball goalwards where Pat Heffernan got possession and was fouled resulting in a penalty which Heffernan shot to the net to give his side a two point lead. Pallasgreen had a pointed a free to leave only one point between the sides. Blackrock replied, with the score of the game, a point from outfield near the side from Eddie O’Keeffe, this was in fact Blackrock’s first score from play. Pallasgreen hit back with a pointed free. Pallasgreen scored the equaliser from a free before Pat Heffernan restored a one point lead for Blackrock from a free. KILFINANE ATHLETIC CLUB: Intermediate Cross Country 2013: Kilfinane AC’s hosting of the County Intermediate Cross was a great success. Great credit must go to all club members involved in bringing this event together in recent weeks, from course preparation, registration, stewarding, photographs, providing refreshments, training, organising the club shop and to the O’Donnell’s in particular for hosting the event and providing such a well laid out cross country course in perfect condition. We got the rub of the green for a change with the weather and all events ran very smoothly with refreshments and O’Donnell hospitality enjoyed by all afterwards.

In terms of race results Limerick AC dominated the Intermediate men’s competition and West Limerick the ladies competition. Great to see such a big turn out with good representation from all Limerick clubs. From Kilfinane AC’s perspective the highlight of the day was the juvenile and women’s team results. A fantastic team performance by the women’s team saw them winning silver in the intermediate team race which included Patricia Wade, Breda Bridges, Agne Bulyceva, Helen Hartigan, Edel Hennessy, Niamh Doody and Siobhan Colclough. Great performances also in the Masters categories. In the O45 category Helen Hartigan was first over 45 and Patricia Wade Second with Breda Bridges coming Second in the over 40 Category. In the Masters Team event Helen Hartigan, Breda Bridges and Patricia Wade came Third Top results by a top group of ladies. The men’s team narrowly missed out on a team medal in a very competitive team event. It was a great performance never the less and it was great to see Greg Ryan back amongst the lead runners with an excellent Fifth place overall. The remaining members of the men’s team put in a determined effort including Patrick Irwin, Ruairi O Callaghan, Martin Hennessy, Patrick O’ Sullivan, Vincent O’Donnell and Michael Fenton.

Despite losing out on a lot of juvenile runners due to rugby and hurling matches, the club had some great performances on home soil. First in action was Sean and Enda in the u13 event. Enda produced a fantastic run to claim silver much to the delight of the home support, Sean put in a huge effort and was always in contention finishing in a brilliant 5th place in his first cross country race. Sprint specialist Peter put in a solid run at u15 grade, however his main goal is the Indoor track in a few weeks. One of the standout performance of the whole day was Edd’s Valatha’s runaway victory at u17 level, another gold medal to his collection. Well done to all of our runners. Next up is Limerick and Munster Indoors as well as County Senior Cross Country and Munster Cross Country in a few weeks. Training will continue on Saturdays in Dromin at 9am (long runs) and on Thursdays in Kilfinane at 7pm (interval / shorter distance).
