After a series of well attended meetings in Garrydoolis NS, plans for this Summer’s festival are being put together by a newly formed committee made up of various citizens from the parish. While these plans are at an early stage they are being developed further at each meeting and all in attendence agree that the Sarsfield 320 Festival has excellent potential for both the young and the old in the area. Starting with an official opening on Thursday evening July 25th the festival will consist of sporting events, historical talks and walks, crossroads dancing, trad music sessions, childrens funday, sports day, BBQ’s, live music,5km walk and of course, culminating in a Memorial Service and laying of wreaths for Patick Sarsfield on Sunday July 28th,(the eve of his death in 1693, Landen, Belgium) at Templebraden Church, Ballyneety. Lots of work and organisation will be needed in the coming weeks and months to ensure that we put our ‘best foot forward’ but we are in no doubt that it will be a great credit to the people of the district when finalised. If you feel you can contribute or you just want to see what’s going on please contact 0879221205/0872852155/0878381536 and we will let you know when festival meetings are happening. Also and very importantly we need ye, the people of the parish,a.s.a.p., to let your family and friends abroad or in other parts of Ireland know that this festival is happening and that it would be a great time for them to be here with us collectively. A festival website will also be in place shortly, details of which will be given to you when completed.

All proceeds are to help with expenses for flowers, petrol for lawnmowers etc. lots of prizes on the night. The Tidy Towns committee is working hard to ensure that the areas of Pallasgreen, Old Pallas and Nicker can become one of the most attractive and tidiest communities in the county. The townlands are rich in history. Within the shadow of the great Mote lies Old Pallas with its grandeur stone walls and large houses and a square that hosted many a fair in its early years. New Pallas situated on the main limerick-Tipperary road is skylined by the RIC Barracks built in 1874 and the former Erasmus Smith school house now modernized, Nicker a haven overshadowed by the hill of Knockgrean. Its noted for its unique and spectacular grotto at the rear of St John The Baptist Church. Not too far away from the historic Sarsfield Rock is the unspoilt area of Barna a hamlet nestled in the woodland setting of Derk. The community has some fantastic amenities to offer with rolling hill sides and areas of natural beauty to be proud off. It’s our community and up to each one of us to make it a place for us all to enjoy. It would be great if we all could work together and improve our surroundings. So come along to the Table Quiz for a good night’s entertainment, great fun and great prizes on the night and make a positive start to the Tidy Towns Campaign. Club Fixtures: Well done to our Senior Footballers who defeated Mountcollins 4-9 to 1-7 in the All County Football League Saturday evening to make it two wins out of two. Leading 2-5 to 0-6 at half time, Pallas were in control during most of the match. Scorers: Kevin Barry 1-2, David McMahon 1-1, Aidan Shanahan 1-0, Pa Hennessy 1-0, Seamus Hayes 0-3, Chris McMahon, Robert O Donnell and Wayne McCarthy, all one point.

Congratulations also to the U-21 Hurlers who beat Naomh Bríd in a hard fought contest in Caherelly last Friday by a score of nine points to 1-5. A strong breeze aided Pallasgreen to a seven points to three lead at half time, and facing against the breeze in the second half they were able to weather a strong come back by Naomh Bríd coming back strongly in the end with two points late on to win the game. Scorers: Colin Ryan (M) 0-7, Paudie O’Dwyer and Darren Roche, both one point.

Unfortunately their luck didn’t hold in the East Final on Sunday March 31, playing with the wind in the first half Pallasgreen were trailing Capamore by 2-5 to five points. Pushing hard in the second half they brought the scores back level at 2-6 to 1-9, however Cappamore had one final score in them, pointing from a free late in the game to win the match.
