This will replace the current Newcastle West Local Area Plan 2008 - 2014. COMMUNITIES ON LINE: West Limerick Resources will run a final ‘Communities on Line’ course in Newcastle West each Wednesday 7.30 to 10 pm from February 19 to April 2. The course, which is hands-on, will show community groups how to develop their own free website and set up a Facebook page. On completion, groups will have a fully operational website. All participants must have a sound basic knowledge of computers and be comfortable in the use of the internet, email and simple applications such as Word. NEWCASTLE WEST FILM CLUB: On Friday, February 7, Newcastle West Film Club presents the first movie of the current season. In the early 1970’s a shy Mexican singer songwriter in Detroit makes two albums which sell 6 copies. He is tracked down in obscurity nearly 30 years later by a journalist from South Africa, where he has become bigger than Elvis. ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ sounds like a fairy tale – but this is real life. It stars at 8 pm in The Desmond Complex (rear of fire station). It costs €7 per screening and refreshments are available. If you are unable to attend we are back again on November 1 and December 6. FUN ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR PARENTS: A new programme will offer parents from the Newcastle West area the opportunity to meet other parents, explore their artistic side and pick up tips on supporting their child’s development. It is based in the Newcastle West Family and Community Hub. Each Thursday, parents will begin by learning the traditional technique of ‘Felt Making’, before deciding which other crafts they would like to explore as a group. The group will get support, information and guidance on how to promote their child’s development and self- esteem, through short information sessions, which will be run at intervals during the ten week course. Run by West Limerick Resources, with the support of the VEC, the course is free of charge and open to those who have not completed the Leaving Cert, who are parenting alone and those in receipt of means tested social welfare payments. PARISH SOCIAL: A Parish Social (Dinner Dance) will be held in the Courtenay Lodge Hotel on Friday, February 28. Invitations will be issued shortly to people who help out regularly in the parish.

ARRA FRIENDS: The next meeting will take place at 4.30 pm on Wednesday, February 12 in the Desmond Complex. Please note that, due to circumstances beyond our control, the AGM has to be postponed until further notice. We would remind you all that Membership fees are now due. Eight members from ARRA Friends, Newcastle West attended a Senior Citizens’ Reception at Aras An Uachtarain on Friday, January 31. We were honoured and delighted to have been presented to the President Michael D. Higgins and his wife, Sabina. The group really appreciated his address – which was well received by the assembled company. The refreshments provided were absolutely delicious and all the staff was most welcoming and helpful. We were entertained by singer Sandy Kelly, and her rendition of country music songs was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. We had a wonderful, unforgettable, once-in-a lifetime experience.

VALENTINES BALL: A Valentines Ball will take place at the Woodlands House Hotel on Friday, February 21. Kicking off with music in hotel foyer, followed by a 4 course meal with complimentary wine – with music by Limerick band ‘Final Touch’- including a Disco by DJB. Tickets are €50 each. A raffle on tickets will also take place for weekend hotel break and numerous other prizes. All proceeds will go to Milford Hospice and Pieta House

NCW FAMILY CLUB: The Newcastle West Family Club for primary school age children and their parents restarts this Wednesday February 5th from 3.30-4.45pm. Activities include art and games with a play area available for younger siblings to come too. Free for eligible families in receipt of social welfare. Parents must stay throughout. DAY TRIP: A guided tour of the Dáil has been organized for Wednesday, March 26. You will have an opportunity to see the inside of this most beautiful house – with its fantastic marble staircase, works of art, and beautiful décor. Our guide will fill us in on the history of this famous house. Leaving Newcastle West at 8am on board Brouder’s luxury coach – and will pick up en-route. Breakfast and dinner will be served in the Harbour View Hotel. In this hotel, all the bread at breakfast is home made and available to purchase. If you wish, you can order home made bread, cakes etc, in the morning and pick them up after dinner in the evening. There will also be some free time for you to do as you please in Dublin. NEWCASTLE WEST LANGUAGE & PLAY GROUP: The Newcastle West Language and Play programme runs each Wednesday from 10.30-12 noon. This Developmental Play programme is full of activities to help children (under 4) get ready for preschool/school. There will be painting, play dough, arts and crafts, which will help you to understand the way your children play and how playing can help children learn to read/write. An early Childhood Specialist will visit the group over the next two sessions offering advice and guidance on a range of issues. Free for eligible families in receipt of social welfare payment. DRAMA WORKSHOPS: West Limerick Resources will be offering a series of drama workshops across the West Limerick area this spring. TOWARDS OCCUPATION CASTLEMAHON: Are you looking for a sense of purpose, wellbeing, confidence - perhaps a new start? West Limerick Resources is offering you a unique opportunity to rebuild your confidence and skills with the Towards Occupation Programme. RAINBOWS SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN: Rainbows is a free support group for children between the ages of 4 and 12 – designed to assist children and youths who are grieving a death, separation or any other painful transition or change in their family. Run by trained volunteers, the programme is not a counseling or therapy service, but is instead, a safe, confidential setting where children can share their grief associated feelings with each other and with these trained facilitators. New progammes will begin in Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale in early 2014 for will be of one hour duration per week for twelve weeks. S.J.Y.P.S: The Newcastle West Branch of St. Joseph’s Young Priests Society will resume its monthly meetings on Thursday, February 6 at 8pm in the Parish Office. All promoters are earnestly requested to attend – with new promoters most welcome.

BISHOP’S VISIT: As you may be aware, the parish have put together a Family Prayer Booklet in the hope that some families will take up this practice. The Bishop has kindly agreed to come and celebrate the 10.30am Mass on Sunday, February 9 – where he will officially launch it. All are welcome.

DESMOND COMPLEX: Our next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday March 5. All the usual activities will take place and we are hopeful of a large attendance. DANCING WEEKEND: A dancing weekend will take place from Friday, May16 to Monday, May 19 – staying in the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway – dancing every night – with Michael English and his band on Saturday night. You will enjoy a full Irish breakfast and four course dinner each day. During the day, we will be out and about – taking in the beautiful West Cork scenery. There are only a limited number of places available. Dunmanway is, of course, the birthplace of Sam Maguire and all GAA people will know about the Sam Maguire Cup. MEDJUGORJE 2014: The Newcastle West Medjugorje Prayer Group are in the process of organizing a pilgrimage to Medjugorje from July 30 to August 6, departing from Dublin airport.
