Christmas shopping is as much about the atmosphere of hustle and bustle; the sights, smells and sounds as the commerce itself - and that is not something that can be replicated on Amazon or the iTunes Store.

Revelations on TV this week on how Amazon treats staff at its soul-less warehouses in the UK - where many gifts under the tree in Limerick will have originated from - provide more food for thought.

E-commerce is convenient but, once postage and packaging is thrown in, not always as cheap as we might think.

Readers of the Limerick Leader will be familiar with the struggles of retailers in town centres around the county and in the heart of Limerick. We hope that many of them will make a conscious effort to support local jobs and local businesses this Christmas and bring the kids on a special shopping trip they will always remember.
