TIDY TOWNS SUCCESS: Ballina retained its Bronze Medal Award, worth €400 in the 2013 Tidy Towns competition that saw a three-point improvement for both Ballina and Killaloe on last year’s score. Ballina was awarded 296 points and Killaloe 269 points. Congratulations and well done to both Tidy Towns committees and volunteers for their huge commitment and hard work. Congratulations also to Denis Floyd, Birdhill who received a well-deserved SuperValu Tidy Towns “Hero” award.

ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS: Adult swimming lessons will begin in the Lakeside Leisure Centre at 8pm on Monday, September 23 and run for four weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays. Class prices are €90 for members and €140 for non-members, with limited practice sessions at the Pool during the week available to non-members. ARTS MARKET: An indoor Craft Market will be held at Quay Arts on the second Sunday of each month from 12pm to 4pm. The first market offered a huge range of hand made crafts by local artists/crafts persons and was enjoyed by all attendees. Come along on October 13th and maybe you will purchase a Christmas gift!
KILLALOE WATER FESTIVAL: Killaloe-Ballina’s newest festival, - “Waterways Ireland – Killaloe Water Festival” - which will celebrate all forms of water sports, surrounded by a carnival atmosphere, will take place on September 28 and 29. Events include a night swim (9pm to 10pm) from The Pier Head to “Between the Waters”: outdoor film show (Friday) and a 3km swim on Saturday at 10am where swimmers will go up river on the Spirit of Killaloe and swim back to Ballina Quay. WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY: To celebrate World Alzheimer’s Day on this Thursday, September 19th management and staff at Waterman’s Lodge Respite and Daycare Centre will host an afternoon of music and refreshments from 2pm to 3.30pm. All are invited to attend!
“CULTURAL NIGHT”: East Clare Comhaltas will host a ‘Cultural Night’ on Friday, September 20th at Clonlara Hall from 7pm until 9pm. The evening will include a performance by Comhaltas branch musicians, interval for refreshments and an opportunity for audience participation. This event is free of charge and all singers, instrumentalists and traditional music lovers are welcome to attend a night of entertainment for all the family.

KILLALOE-BALLINA JUNIOR INFANTS: We wish the best of luck to the one hundred and five boys and girls from Killaloe, Ballina and Boher who embarked on their ‘first level’ education in the local Primary Schools. Ballina School received 56 boys and girls: Boher, 10: Killaloe Convent, 20 and Killaloe boys, 19. Enrolment numbers are on the increase in all our schools with 751 young people attending primary schools in Ballina-Boher-Killaloe.
KILLALOE-BALLINA ANGLERS: Poor weather conditions prevailed for the Killaloe-Ballina anglers taking part in last Sunday’s competition, jointly sponsored by Bob Bradwell and Brian Grogan. The club extends sincere gratitude to Bob and Brian for their continued sponsorship and also to Bob who provided most welcome food at the Presentation of Prizes. Competition winners included Gerry Horan and Maurice O’Dwyer (1st): Mike Conroy (2nd): Ger Mc Keogh (3rd): Shane Lancaster (4th) and Sean Collins (5th).
The next competition, - Trout Trolling – will be held on Sunday, September 29 and the sponsor is Colette Hanly (Clare Tipp Properties). Fishing will run from 10am with the Presentation of Prizes at O’Donovan’s at 7pm.
SMITH O’BRIEN MINOR CLUB: Congratulations to Smith O’Brien’s under 10 hurlers who had a terrific win in the annual John Joe Nevin Tournament in Ballina. They beat Portroe in the A final having triumphed over Newport and Ballina to top their group. Our last success in this competition had been in 2007 and the honour of collecting this year’s trophy fell to team captain and scorer of the winning goal in the final, Stephen Geraghty. Well done to all concerned.
NORTH TIPPERARY VICTORY: Well done to the Ballina Minor hurling team that brought silverware and honour to their Club and Parish by a great 1-16 to 0-15 victory over Burgess on Sunday last.
