“PILGRIM HILL”: Congratulations to 24 year old Gerard Barrett of Carrueragh, Knockanure, whose film “Pilgrim Hill” won the Irish Film and Television Academy Award at the Convention Centre, Dublin on Saturday night, February 9. Gerard had been nominated as a Rising Star in the competition, as this film had already been awarded the best entry in last year’s Galway Film Festival. The event on this occasion was broadcast on RTE 1 television. “Pilgrim Hill” was scripted, produced and directed by Gerard and was filmed on location with a cast of six. Joe Mullins played the lead role as a lonely bachelor farmer in a rural setting and portrayed the many different aspects of a life lived in such an environment. Gerard’s father Joe comes from Knockdown and his mother Peggie (nee O’Sullivan) is a native of Knocknagorna, Athea.
DEATH OF NELLIE HANNON: The death occurred peacefully at her home in Kingsland on February 7 of Nellie Hannon (nee McCarthy) in her 94th year. Deceased had been in good health for a person of that age up to a short time ago and was always friendly and cheerful when she met people whom she knew. She will be very much missed by her family, extended family, her sister, relatives, friends and neighbours, all of whom she held in high esteem.
A vast number of people from all over Limerick, Kerry and beyond called to Harnett’s Funeral Home, Abbeyfeale, on Sunday evening to pay their respects and offer their sympathy to the family. The removal took place later to the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale. There was also a large congregation at the Requiem Mass on Monday and a big attendance at the funeral afterwards to Reilig Ide Naofa cemetery, Abbeyfeale. Sympathy is extended to her daughters, sons-in-law, sister, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives. May her soul rest in peace.
Nellie was predeceased by her husband Jack some years ago and members of their family are very much involved in the promotion of Irish cultural activities. Noreen de Barra has been secretary of Athea Comhaltas branch for decades. Josephine O’Connor was a founding member of West Limerick Set Dancing Club and another sister Ann Curtin formed the West Limerick Singing Club.
Nellie and Jack’s son-in-law Domhnall de Barra has been National President of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for two separate terms in former years.
BIRTHDAY GIRL: Ciara O’Grady, daughter of Tom and Marcella, Knockdown, celebrated her 21st birthday recently with a party of her family members, relatives and friends at Brown Joe’s Bar, Athea. Congratulations and best wishes to Ciara.
60TH BIRTHDAY: Mossy Sheehan of Hillside Drive celebrated his 60th birthday with family members, relatives and friends at Brown Joe’s Bar, Athea on Sunday night of last week. Best wishes to Mossy for future years.
40TH BIRTHDAY: Donal Woulfe, Cratloe West, recently celebrated his 40th birthday with a party at his home of family members, relatives and friends. Best wishes to Donal on this special occasion.
BEECHWOOD CONCERT: A very enjoyable afternoon was had by the residents and staff of Beechwood Nursing Home, Newcastle West on Sunday, February 10 when a concert, sponsored by the Newcastle West Red Cross branch who invited the Ceol Luimnigh members to provide the usual entertainment. It was a great session of music, songs and storytelling and was much appreciated by the audience. Pat Dalton, Chairman of the Red Cross branch, thanked the management, staff and the residents for their welcome and the Ceol Luimnigh group for their fine performance. Ceol Luimnigh members who attended were: Con Warren, Dan Shine, Lisa Shine, Paddy Daly, Martin Enright, Ede Hession, Irene Quaid, Daithi O’Riordan, Tommy O’Riordan, John Hughes, Noel McGee, John Kett. MC Pat Dalton. Josie O’Keeffe and Norah Dooley represented the Red Cross branch.

50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: Congratulations to Dan and Mary Hartnett, Carrigkerry who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Best wishes to both of them for the future.
DIALYSIS FUNDRAISER: A fundraising night in aid of the Dialysis Unit at Limerick Regional will be held at the Flag Floor, Glensharrold on Friday, March 1 at 9.30pm. This is expected to be a great night of the best of traditional entertainment with music, songs and dancing. Tea and refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome.
21ST BIRTHDAY: Amy Horgan, daughter of John and Doris, Athea, recently celebrated her 21st birthday with her family members, relatives and friends at the Top of the Town Bar. Congratulations to Amy and best wishes for future success.
LADIES FOOTBALL REGISTRATION: Registration for all ages in the Athea Ladies football teams will take place this Friday evening, February 22 at the Con Colbert Sports Hall from 7pm to 8pm. Parents of the younger girls teams are also asked to attend in order to fill up the forms on behalf of the children. If there are some who would like to help out with the teams during the coming year they are asked to give in their names to Liz O’Sullivan. The Club is looking forward to another successful year in ladies football.
