GAA NEWS: The campaigns of our three candidates for mayor continue with great inventiveness and gusto. On the 9thLaura Heelan hosted a very enjoyable night in the Red Deer with her All Star Mr & Mrs competition where the couples were forensically examined to see which pair knew their partners the best. On Sunday she hosted a family day at the field, with everybody attending having a good time, and getting their cars cleaned into the bargain. Her campaign continues with a pool and darts tournament over next weekend in Powers Pub.
Colin Ryan began his own campaign with a Darts tournament last Saturday night after the Senior Football match in Powers. Next week his campaign team will organise a sports quiz at 9:30p.m. on Friday night in O’Dwyers pub, followed by a pool tournament in the Red Deer on Saturday night. Unfortunately the man himself will not be present due to his attempts to win an All-Ireland medal with Limerick Minors.
Our third candidate, Aoife Fanning begins her campaign this week, starting off with an auction of signed jerseys belonging to all four of the All-Ireland hurling semi finalists. She will also be hosting a race night in O’Dwyers pub on Friday 23rd August in aid of her campaign.
Pallasgreen festival: The Pallasgreen festival is taking place from the 21st to the 25th August next. With lots of events taking place during the festival, including Monster Bingo on the Wednesday night, a team Truck Pull competition on the Friday night and a Cycling race of the parish on Saturday night, there will be lots of events catering for every taste.
But undoubtedly the highlight of the festival with be the Sunday afternoon field festival in Pallasgreen GAA pitch. With a children’s adventure area with the tallest rock wall in Europe, longest obstacle course in Ireland, 4 bungee trampolines, a bucking bronco, and bouncy castles galore, Bar-B-Q and teahouse, Wheel of Fortune, Mini Bingo, and many other events on the day it promises to be fun for all the family.
The festival climaxes with the Donkey Derby buster race to be held around 6:00p.m. on the Sunday evening. Tickets are currently being sold for the Derby, at €5 per ticket and with a winning prize of €500 for the ticket which predicts the correct order in which the donkeys finish on the day. The tickets are available throughout the parish, being sold by many members of the club.
All Ireland Semi-Final: Best of luck Sunday to both Limerick teams; and especially our own Colin Ryan in the Minor Semi-Final. Hopefully we will see both teams line out on Sunday 8th September to compete in their respective All-Ireland Finals.
Pallasgreen Bingo: Pallasgreen GAA Bingo is held every Wednesday in Pallasgreen Community Centre at 8.30pm. Please support by coming along and taking part.
On Tuesday night Pallasgreen travelled to Kilteely to face Oola in the replay of the East Senior Football Championship semi-final. Oola got off to a flyer with a well taken point almost immediately after throw in. However, Pallasgreen responded magnificently with an unreplied 2-2. After taking the early lead Pallasgreen traded points with Oola, going in at half time 2-7 to six points up. In the second half Oola valiantly tried to reduce the deficit, however Pallasgreen’s back six were up to the task restricting the men in silver and red to four points ensuring their eventual victory by 2-10 to 0-10. Scorers were:
Kevin Barry 1-5 (0-3 frees), Joe O’Keefe 1-2, Liam O’Dea 0-2, Seamus Mulcahy and Seamu Hayes a point each.
Friday night saw our Senior Footballers travel to Clarina to face St. Kieran’s in the County Senior Football championship. Unfortunately they weren’t able to build on the momentum of the earlier good win over Oola. In the first half Pallasgreen matched St. Kieran’s blow for blow and were perhaps unfortunate to go in at half time holding a 0-4 to 0-4 draw. In the second half St. Kieran’s came out much the stronger while Pallasgreen faded away. With four early points without reply St. Kieran’s took the lead and never look back. Their victory was sealed late on with a close range goal. Final score was 1-10 to 0-6. Scorers were:
Seamus Hayes, Kevin Barry, Chris McMahon, Jonathon Deere, Tony McMahon and Mike Moloney all a point each.
