ADRENALINE junkies around the county will get the chance to dive from the skies over Knocklong in a gravity-defying bungee jump to raise funds for the local community centre.
The event is just one of a number of initiatives which have been organised in the local area in a bid to raise enough finance to refurbish the centre which has fallen into disrepair in recent times.
“The last renovation took place on the building in 1980 following a big fundraising initiative,” explained Mary Harty, PRO of Knocklong Development Association.
“The big thing now is to get the asbestos out. There are very high levels of asbestos in the roof. It’s a fairly solid building and we want to bring it up to modern standards so it can be used by a lot of people,” she added.
Apart from the hosting of an event in the meeting room on occasion, the centre, which is located near the sports field, is almost completely unused at the moment.
A playgroup was cancelled at the venue for health and safety reasons and the centre no longer hosts the youth club, indoor hurling or indoor soccer.
The hope is to get the centre refurbished so it will be the heart and soul of the community once again.
“There is nothing really on there at the moment,” Mary added.
As well as the bungee jump there will also be a harvest fair in the sports field in Knocklong – both events take place on Sunday, October 2.
The community are hoping to raise over €100,000 for the centre through their fundraising endeavours with additional financial support.
“We are hoping for support from Ballyhoura. An engineer is going to survey the whole project. We are going to use the bungee jump to raise money and then the harvest fair is just a community event – we are not going to charge people to go in or anything,” said Mary.
Knocklong Development Association also hope to launch an interest free loan facility to raise funds for the refurbishment.
There will also be a Halloween fancy dress party on October 29 in Bulgaden Castle.
Those taking part in the bungee jump have to raise a minimum of €150.
