KILFINANE PARENT & TODDLER GROUP : Kilfinane Parent & Toddler Group will hold their Annual Church Gate Collection on this weekend Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June in Kilfinane, your continued support would be appreciated. On Monday next 10 June the Group will hold a Sports Day with a Treasure Hunt and on Monday 17 June the Group will hold an Open Day.

BLESSING and OFFICIAL OPENING OF SCOIL FHIONAIN : The sun shone brightly on Thursday last 30 May in Kilfinane for the Blessing and Opening of Scoil Fhionain which opened its doors to pupils on Monday 3 September 2012 which was a red letter day Kilfinane as the wait was finally over after a long battle for the new school down the years. There was a very fine turnout for the ceremony which was attended by many parents and teachers from primary schools in the area. The proceedings got under way with music from the School Band under the supervision of Joan Slattery, while the pupils also entertained those present with some fine singing. Ms Siobhan O’Flynn Principal addressed and welcomed all present. In her address she outlined the many years of the campaign for a new school in Kilfinane and she thanked all who helped to bring about the new school, Scoil Fhionain, she paid particular reference to the former principal Angela Hennessy, and Vice Principal Marion O’Shaughnessy as well as Board of Management Chairperson Joan Halpin, for their efforts and work over the years in securing the building of the school, were also presented with a Bouquet of Flowers in appreciation of their work. In paying tribute to the Board of Management, Parents Council, Ms O’Flynn also thanked the Community of Kilfinane for their support. Fr. Michael Hanley then Blessed the building and Ms O’Flynn then declared the School Officially Open to the applause of the crowd. After the ceremony all present were invited to refreshments and a tour of the School.

CONGRATULATIONS : Congratulations are also extended to local camogie player, Katie Hennessy who was a member of the Limerick team that won the National Camogie League Division Two title when they defeated Cork in the final at Ballygiblin on Sunday 26 May, also to local juvenile hurler Michael Duggan who was a member of the South Limerick Primary School Team that recently won the Mackey Cup, the primary School Inter Divisional County competition. A pupil of the local Scoil Fhionain, he was the first pupil to bring a County hurling medal to the new school, Michael will be on the Limerick Primary School team that will play Tipperary at Pairc na nGael Limerick on Sunday next 9 June at the interval of the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final game

TIDY TOWNS : At present Kilfinane Tidy Towns Committee are working very hard to enhance the appearance of the town and its environs, cleaning up of various areas are underway and painting and provision of Flower pots have greatly added to the appearance of the streets.

‘CHORALS for COINS’ : Kilfinane Church of Ireland Conservation Committee held a very successful Fundraising ‘Chorals for Coins’ on Friday night last 31 May at The Church of Ireland, which featured The Tipperary Gospel Choir plus local talent.

JUNIOR HURLERS IN LEAGUE FINAL ON THIS SATURDAY : Blackrock will play Dromin Athlacca in the final of the Dan Dooley Ford Centre Knocklong sponsored South Junior ‘B’ Hurling League on this Saturday evening at Knocklong at 7pm. Records show that Blackrock won the South and County Junior ‘B’ League title twenty one years ago in 1992, the panel was Con Danaher, Peter O’Sullivan, Bernard O’Shaughnessy, Seoirse Bulfin, Pat Irwin, George Hosford, John Lyons, Mike O’Neill,Thomas Gleeson, Kieran Fitzgerald, Ger O’Sullivan, Tommie Carroll, John McCarthy, Ollie Herbert, Paul McCarthy, Stephen O’Meara, Pat McNamara, Ian McCarthy, Jackie McCarthy, Richard Coughlan, Ian McMahon, Brian McCarthy. Hopefully the team of 2013 can repeat the success of twenty one years ago. Meanwhile the Intermediate hurlers will play Monaleen in the second Round of the County Hurling Championship on Saturday 15 June in Hospital at 7.30pm, while The Michael Fox Memorial Park where some work is currently underway which includes the provision of a walking track and spectator Stand is the venue on Sunday 16 June for the Senior Hurling Championship clash of Effin and Hospital Herbertstown at 7.30pm.

BEST OF LUCK : Best of Luck is extended to local hurler Richard McCarthy who will line out for Limerick when they meet Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final at Pairc na nGael in Limerick on Sunday. Richard continues a proud McCarthy and Kilfinane link with County teams over very many years.

KILFINANE ATHLETIC CLUB: Cork Marathon : Well done to Marathon Men Seamus Hourigan, Ruairi O’Callaghan and John Meehan and the aptly named ‘Fun 5’ Relay team of Niamh Doody, Helen Fitzgerald O’Sullivan, Agne Bulyceva, Joanne Moore and Patricia Wade on great performances in Mondays Cork Marathon

Seamus Hourigan led the Marathon runners home with a fantastic time of 3:25:07, 150 place and 16th 045. Ruairi also ran a fine race and was close behind in 3:27:10 with John knocking another 6 minutes off his PB with a great time of 3:36:38.The Fun 5 team put in a great performance and completed the course in 3:55. Seamus and John have the distinction of completing both the Cork and Limerick Marathons in the last month, neither having an easy time of it with injury but great to see that all came good for them on the day.

All Ireland Schools Trach & Field. : Edd Valatka competed in the All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday last 1 June where he competed in the 800 mtrs and finished in Eight place overall. This was no doubt another great experience for Edd who continues to compete against the best in his age group in only his first year in athletics competition, a year which has seen him win County, North Munster and Munster medals in both Cross Country and Track events, and its not over yet with the Munster Juvenile T&F Championships taking place this weekend.

Doneraile 5K : An incredible 459 runners took to the start line for the Doneraile 5k on a beautiful evening for a run. This was the last race in the Doneraile 4 race series and the first race in the Ballyhoura Cork series. Our first 3 runners home were well in contention with less than 20 seconds separating them. Great to see Pat Irwin back in action and fair play to James Gubbins who put in a good time on the back of completing the Edinburgh Marathon last Sunday. Gary Egan continues to post PB’s with every race. Great run by Anne Daly who joined the club in recent weeks. The following times were posted by club runners: Pat Irwin Tenth 18:14,Gary Egan Twelveth 18:25, James Gubbins Thirteenth18:31, Sean Manning Thirty Third 20:04, Paul Aherne Eighteth 22:28, Anne Daly Two Hundred and Twenty Sixth 28:04. Former club member Gráinne O’Callaghan had a great run finishing in 19:31 and was Second lady home. Well done to Mallow AC for a great event, hard to top Doneraile as a location for a 5K.

Knockainey 10K : Knockainey AFC hosted an excellent 5k and 10k event on Saturday last 1 June last. Sean Manning, Patricia Wade, Tina Hayes and Helen Fitzgerald ran the 10k.

Kilfinane AC 5 Mile Race :The Kilfinane AC 5 Mile is now only 2 weeks away, with Friday 21 June fast approaching. On line entry is now available on Run Ireland. https://eventmaster.ie/ The race starts at 7.30pm and there are good prizes on offer this year including first 3 Men/Women and Male/Female 035, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and top 3 junior boys/girls There will also be a club team prize for the first male/female team of 4. This years registration and prize giving is at Scoil Pol Kilfinane where changing facilities will be available for participants. We’ll aim to be more efficient than ever with results and after race grub is guaranteed to be top drawer. Training on the Kilfinane AC 5 mile route will continue for the next 2 Sundays at 7pm and is a great opportunity for anyone running the race to try out the route. Was great to see good numbers running the course last Sunday.

Training : Training continues each Saturday in Dromin at 9.30 am. Weds evening interval training in Dromin is at 7pm.

GLENROE/BALLYORGAN SUMMER OUTING: The Glenroe/Ballyorgan Summer Outing this year will be on Thursday 4 July. We will be travelling to Tralee with refreshments on arrival followed by a visit to Ashe Hall where there are several interesting self guided tours to do. We will then travel on to Killarney to Muckross House where there will be plenty of free time for you to get lunch, visit the house or farm or just sit and enjoy the sun (hopefully)!! Then an hour in Killarney town en route to Templeglantine where we will have a 4 course dinner in the Devon Inn. The cost of the trip is 30euro which includes travel, morning refreshments, admission to Ashe Hall and the dinner in Templeglantine. CONCERT ON THIS SAT NIGHT : One of Ireland’s top entertainers, Michael English will appear in concert at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel, Adare on this Saturday night, 8 June. Michael English, now a top star on the entertainment scene, made his first major appearance on the Late Late toy show on RTE when he was just 12 year s of age. He subsequently went on to become a major attraction on the dancing circuit and captured national attention with a Henry McMahon song, The Nearest To Perfect . Michael, who concentrates on the concert circuit says that he’s really looking forward to appearing at the family run Woodlands House Hotel. Tickets are now available at 061 605100.
