PLANS to develop Rathkeale as a visitor attraction have been boosted by the opening of a tourist office in the town.
And the community council, which is behind the initiative, hopes to produce a visitor brochure before the tourist season opens next year.
The tourist office is located in the community centre and is combined with a community information centre. It is being run by two part-time workers, funded by West Limerick Resources under the TUS programme, who are also responsible for the local newsletter and maintaining the community website.
The development is just one of a number of initiatives undertaken over the past year by a restructured community council.
Another development, which community council chairman Padraig Doherty hopes will also bring visitors into Rathkeale is the refurbishment of the town’s community centre.
The refurbishment has included the installation of new sound and lighting systems which will make the centre more attractive as a venue for plays and concerts.
A lift is also to be installed and Mr Doherty expects the work to be completed before Christmas.
Meanwhile, the erection of a new playground in the town has been postponed until after Christmas.
