A meeting of the regional Autumn Council was held in the Clarion hotel on Thursday October 24 at 11am. Mary Butler and Teresa Byrne represented Our Lady Queen of Peace club. Active retirement Ireland has now over 550 local associations throughout Ireland with a membership of over 24,000 and is a vibrant and strong organisation.

Maureen Kavanagh CEO, active retirement Ireland voiced her concerns to TDs over recent budget measures which affect senior citizens calling them” shameful and unjust”. Special attention was given to the telephone allowance, the so-called death grant, and the reduction in the number of medical cards, and also prescription charges.

In the course of the meeting it was discussed which of the above would be most harmful to senior citizens and most agreed that the cut in telephone allowances would affect many vulnerable people living alone. Another one was the increase in prescription charges which might lead people to forego some vital medicines.

Members were encouraged to contact their local TDs and voice their discontent.

Another issue is the fact that by September 2014 the banks will abolish chequebooks. Many people will find it difficult to deal with the new technology involved and there is a danger that people will resort to keeping cash in the home. This must be avoided at all costs.

In the afternoon session Liam Toland from Home Instead-Limerick told members about successful ageing and reminded all that ageing is not the problem but successful ageing is important. The important thing is to keep engaged, ageing without growing old.

The meeting closed at 3.15 with many thanks to the organisers.
